What usually causes it

Tap a symptom to see the likely causes.

Runs but no heat

On electric dryers: a burned-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed thermostat. On gas dryers: igniter, gas valve coils or flame sensor.

Takes forever to dry

A clogged lint duct is the most common cause. It also makes the dryer run hot and is a fire risk.

Won't start

A blown thermal fuse, a broken door switch, a failed start switch, or a problem with the outlet or breaker.

Squeaking, thumping or grinding

Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, drum glides or a broken belt.

Stops after a few minutes

Overheating from restricted airflow, or a failing motor or thermostat.

Before the technician arrives

  • Clean the lint screen and check the vent hood outside: you should feel strong airflow when the dryer runs.
  • Check that the dryer is plugged in and the breaker isn't tripped. Electric dryers use two breakers.
  • If you smell gas, stop using the dryer, don't turn on switches, and call your gas company.
  • Don't keep running a dryer that smells of burning.

Repair or replace?

Dryers are simple machines and usually last 10 to 13 years. Most repairs, like heating elements, fuses, belts, rollers and igniters, cost much less than a new dryer, so repair is almost always the better choice.

Keep your dryer running longer

  • Clean the lint screen after every load.
  • Have the vent duct cleaned about once a year.
  • Don't overload the drum.
  • Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, not plastic or foil accordion hose.

Dryer repair questions

Why does my dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?

The fuse blows when the dryer overheats, almost always because of a clogged vent. Replacing the fuse without cleaning the vent means it will blow again.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes, both gas and electric dryers of all major brands.

Is a hot dryer top normal?

Warm is normal. Too hot to touch usually means restricted airflow. Stop using it and check the vent.

How often should the vent be cleaned?

About once a year, more often with heavy use or a long vent run.
