What usually causes it

Tap a symptom to see the likely causes.

Won't drain

A clogged drain pump filter (coins, hair ties, socks), a kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump.

Won't spin

An unbalanced load, a worn lid switch or door lock, a broken drive belt, or a failed motor control board.

Leaking

A torn door boot seal on front-loaders, a loose or cracked hose, or a leaking pump. Too much detergent can also push suds out.

Won't start

A faulty door lock, a tripped outlet or breaker, a failed control board, or a stuck start button.

Very loud or shaking

Worn drum bearings, broken shock absorbers or suspension springs, or a washer that isn't level.

Before the technician arrives

  • Check the drain pump filter on front-loaders. It's usually behind a small door at the bottom front. Keep towels ready: water will come out.
  • Run a small, balanced load to see if the problem repeats.
  • Make sure the water taps behind the washer are fully open.
  • If the door is locked with water inside, don't force it open.

Repair or replace?

Washers usually last about 10 to 13 years. Pumps, door locks, belts, seals and suspension parts are typical and reasonable repairs. Worn drum bearings on an older machine can be expensive, so the technician will tell you honestly whether repair is worth it.

Keep your washer running longer

  • Clean the drain filter every few months.
  • Use HE detergent in the recommended amount; more is not better.
  • Leave the front-loader door open after washing to prevent mildew.
  • Run a cleaning cycle once a month.

Washer repair questions

Why does my front-load washer smell?

Moisture trapped in the door seal and detergent residue grow mildew. Wipe the seal, run a hot cleaning cycle, and leave the door open between loads. If the smell stays, the drain may be partly blocked.

My washer stops mid-cycle. What's wrong?

Often a door lock problem, a drain that's too slow, or an unbalanced load. Error codes on the display help us narrow it down.

Do you fix both top-load and front-load washers?

Yes, including stackable and laundry-center units.

Can I use the washer while I wait for the repair?

If it leaks or smells of burning, no. Turn it off and unplug it. If it only drains slowly, small loads may be okay for a day or two.
